23. Make the numbers - 목표를 달성하라!!

Make the numbers 란 '목표를 달성하다, 수치에 이르다'는 의미를 가지고 있다. 이와 유사한 표현으로 'make up the numbers'은 전혀 다른 의미인 '숫자를 조작하다'로 혼동하지 말아야 한다.

 

일의 성과를 나타내는 또 다른 표현으로 'make something happen, pull something off'는 '일이 되게 하다'라는 의미를 가지고 있다.

 

- The idea is to cut corners to make the numbers.

- We brought dead ideas back to life and make the profit numbers.  *다시 소생시키다 = turn things around

- Managers are always under intense pressure to make the numbers.

 

* 투자의 귀재 Warren Buffet의 투자회사 Berkshirehathaway의 연례보고서에는 틀에 박힌 표현보다는 구어체적 냄새가 진한 표현이 많다.

-  Stick to businesses you thoroughly understand : 확실히 알고 있는 기업에 매달려라.

- Avoid risk by only investing in companies whose future cash flow.

- only buy shares in companies if you expect above average returns.

- only buy if you can get shares for less than they are worth.

- Concentrate on value, not price. (Price is what you pay. Value is what you get)

- Do not churn your portfolio.

- If you make a mistake, learn from it.
