Stay the course는 주로 어려움, 위기, 장애등이 발생하였을때 "헤쳐나가자"라는 의미로 쓴다. 유래를 살펴보면 경마에서 말이 끝까지 경주코스에 머물러 완주하는 모습을 '힘들고 어려운 상황을 헤쳐나가는 것에 비유한 표현이다. 결국 많은 어려움 속에서 목표를 달성하기 위하여 최선의 노력을 경주한다는 이미를 함축하여 '시련 속에서 목표를 달성한다'는 의미로 많이 사용된다.
버텨보자는 의미의 구어체 'hang in there'도 자주 쓰인다.
- The company is going to stay the course.
- New challenges ahead are uphill battles. But we will be able to stay the course if we all stick together
* uphill battle : 오르막 싸움. 힘겨운 싸움. 버거운 경쟁상대.
* stick together : 함께 뭉치다.
- If we could stay the course in these bad times, all of our efforts will pay off
- Keep up the good work, and we will stay the course.
- Everything will fall into place, if we stay the course throughout the restructuring process.
* fall into place : 제자리로 돌아가다. 제자리를 찾다.
